Is Your Breakfast Routine Causing You To Gain Weight?

Skipped breakfast this morning? All week? All the time? It’s time to reconsider.

New research published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that people who eat breakfast have higher overall diet quality and greater intake of wholegrains, fruit, fibre, calcium, potassium and folate than breakfast skippers. Breakfast skippers also consumed more added sugar and saturated fat in the evening.

Another take home message from the study: don’t skip if you’re stressed. The researchers found that the breakfast eaters’ diet was not affected by chronic stress, whereas stressed out breakfast skippers ate more empty kilojoules and added sugars at night. Not ideal.

Skipping breakfast as an easy way to cut kilojoules? Don’t bother. The study found no difference in total daily energy intake between breakfast eaters and skippers. So whizz up that smoothie bowl or smash a smashed avo toast tomorrow.
