We’ve been cooped up at home for awhile now. No more visits to the coffee shop — we’ve started perfecting the art of making our favorite Starbucks recipes at home — and our every-other-week trips to Costco are one of the only things saving our sanity (though keep in mind that Costco’s store hours have changed recently). Suffice to say, we’re vulnerable to anything that makes our lives a little easier or more exciting, especially if it involves any sort of exciting new Costco sale or deal. But if you randomly get a text from Costco offering you free merchandise, beware — it’s part of a scam.
The scam was reported by Instagram account CostcoDeals.
Apparently, some people are getting a text that promises $130 in Costco freebies as part of a “Covid-19 stimulus package,” and all you have to do to get the deal is click the link to take out a customer survey. DO NOT CLICK THAT LINK!
Unfortunately, there is no such deal being offered by Costco. It’s a total scam, designed to prey upon people who are feeling vulnerable. I mean, who wouldn’t like $130 of free groceries right now, especially if it means that you and your family can stock up and then stay safe at home for longer between shopping trips?
Even worse, according to CostcoDeals, the scam is targeting older folks. Make sure to share this with your older friends and family members, who might not be quite as tech-savvy. Things are hard enough as it is right now without people having to worry about their loved ones falling prey to a scam.
