I’ve talked about being under the weather before. There’s plenty of contributing factors that can lead to us getting sick or just feeling rubbish but, it’s crazy how sometimes just the change in season (and probably the lack of glorious sunshine) can get us feeling down.
One of the best things you can do to combat this, whether it’s genuine sickness lingering on the horizon or just a general lack of ‘oomph’ in your world, is to up your vitamin C intake. This wonder vitamin does heaps for your body including: help protect your cells from damage, which amongst many things helps battle serious disease and promotes collagen production (hello plump radiant skin!); encourages iron absorption so you can get stronger and feel more energized; helps wounds heal faster; and of course, aids in fighting infections (picture vitamin C as your body’s defence ninja!)
We unfortunately can’t produce vitamin C by ourselves which means we have to ingest it to pump up the gauge. Now, before you buy the grocery store out of oranges let me just blow your mind for a quick second. Our friend the humble orange has not only met its match, it’s been completely kicked out of the ring… by a little-known vitamin C hero: the humble capsicum (that’s a pepper for all you non-Aussies playing at home.)

That’s right. Particularly red capsicums (raw) have around 140mg of vitamin C per 100g of the veg. We’re talking nearly three times what you’d find in an orange. Yup! You’ll also find high amounts in your green and yellow capsicums, but red is where it’s at.
So, clearly capsicums are what we should be stocking up on! And there’s so many ways to enjoy them too.
There’s plenty more too that pack a punch to the orange on the vitamin C scale like guavas, blackcurrants (Ribena does not count haha!), papaya, broccoli, kiwi fruit and kale (but here you do risk being THAT guy eating all the kale.)

Sorry orange, we still love you, but you need to up your game! Start adding capsicums into your salads, add them into your veggie platters, dip them in beautiful hummus or sneaky chop them into a pasta sauce!
