This Guy Lost 130 Pounds in a Year. Here's How He Did It.

Ty Storey weight loss transformation

Ty Storey claims he’s just an average guy. But over the course of a single year, he did something very few people are able to do: He lost — and has kept off — an astonishing 130 pounds.

Storey told MensHealth.com that as a kid, he was always active and played on every sports team he could join. But somewhere along the way, he lost his competitive edge and stopped participating. By his high school graduation, he weighed 250 pounds. Four years later, at his college graduation, his weight hit its peak at 330 pounds.

“In college, I spent most of my time staying up super late doing work and eating constantly,” Storey, who’s from the Canadian province of Ontario, said. “I would go through a loaf of bread a day.”

After college, he’d become incredibly self-conscious — not only because of his weight, but also because he found himself in a bad relationship and was unemployed. He knew he needed a change, “but I had no clue where to start,” he said. He eventually decided to end things with his girlfriend, then killed two birds with one stone by getting a job that would keep him on his feet.

“I ended up getting a job in a warehouse that forced me to be on my feet all day and lift boxes,” Storey explained. “I went from sitting all day and getting winded going up a flight of stairs, to taking 20,000 steps a day and lifting 2,000 boxes.”

When he began this new gig, friends of Storey’s placed bets on how long he would last. But the joke’s on them: Storey is not only still at that job, but lost a dramatic amount of weight along the way thanks to all that walking (which, by the way, can really save your life). He even found a new girlfriend during that time, Steph, who has since upgraded to becoming his fiancé .

“I lost 50 pounds in under six months,” he said. After a full year on the job, he’d dropped 130 pounds — in part by reading about other people’s weight loss journeys (just like you’re doing right now) and heeding their advice.

But as anyone who’s ever lost an extreme amount of weight will tell you, seeing a new number on the scale is far from the end of the story. After hitting 200 pounds, Storey said he became exclusively “obsessed with seeing that number go down” — and lost sight of his overall health and wellness. (Do you have orthorexia, or an unhealthy obsession with clean eating? Here’s how to tell.)

He got himself back on track with MyFitnessPal, which helped him stay within a healthy range for his calories and macros.

Occasionally, he’s also found himself reverting to his college-style eating habits.

“I fall into old habits sometimes,” he admits. “But I remind myself of how good it feels to be healthy — and with the support of my fiancé and the rest of my family, I am able to keep on track and work for my goals.”

As for what he’s doing now to maintain his weight loss, Storey said he’s stuck to his job — ensuring he hits 20,000 steps a day at work — and has added in running a few times a week. (Want to add running to your workout mix? Here’s a beginner’s guide to hitting the pavement a few days a week.)

Storey has one huge goal in mind: running the 2019 New York City Marathon.

“For me, [losing weight] wasn’t about getting super strong or becoming a bodybuilder or doing competitions — I just wanted to feel more confident and be proud of myself,” he said. “I always avoided social situations because I was afraid of how others perceived me. I didn’t want to be thought of as ‘the fat one,’ even though I was the fat one.”

Now, Storey’s looking forward to another big life change: his wedding, which also means his honeymoon.

“I am getting married in November, and my fiancé and I are running and going to the gym a lot to try and look our best,” he said. “We are going to the Dominican [Republic] for our honeymoon, and I can’t wait to be comfortable in my own skin.”
