Red Velvet Reveals a Secret Beauty Moment From "Power Up" You Might Have Missed

In my Allure beauty world, the sign of a good music video isn't the number of views it gets on YouTube, it's the number of beauty tutorials based on the looks from it that matter most. Red Velvet's newest music video for "Power Up" has already gotten 25 million views since dropping on August 6. However, I can't go on YouTube without seeing my recommended section filled with videos of how to recreate Joy, Irene, Yeri, Wendy, and Seulgi's looks from it.

In true Red Velvet fashion, the Korean girl group brought fun yet achievable looks to "Power Up," complete with playful ponytails, shimmery eye makeup, and fruity lip tints that fans could easily try at home. You can even shop the Etude House Matte Lip Lacquer the members swipe on throughout the video. (Red Velvet collabed with the K-beauty brand on the liquid lipstick.)

So what exactly were the stand-out looks from "Power Up" that everyone's experimenting with for themselves? Typically, I round up the best beauty moments from music video myself. For this edition, I called in some reinforcements, though. The members of Red Velvet took a break from promoting their new song to share their favorite hair and makeup moments from the music video, exclusively for Allure.

Red Velvet's Insight on the Concept For the "Power Up" Video

Before we dive into the looks, I asked Red Velvet to break down the concept for "Power Up." Those with familiar with the girl group are well-aware that, like a coin, Red Velvet has two distinct sides: Red and Velvet. For most of 2018, the Velvet side was facing up (so to speak), as shown in "Peek-A-Boo" and "Bad Boy." The group refers to these music videos as "the ones that are very mysterious and full of fantasy-like features." To match this vibe, their hair and makeup were bolder, darker, and more experimental — but still inspired fans to take a crack at it themselves. (I may or may not have tried out Seulgi's red-and-black eyeliner look from "Bad Boy.")

In honor of summer, "Power Up" flipped Red Velvet back to their bubblier, colorful Red side. "'Power Up' is bright and full of energy," the group tells Allure. "If we compare it to the previous summer album, The Red Summer, each of us was symbolized as five types of fruits, including watermelon, pineapple, orange, kiwi, and grapes. The fruit motif continues in this music video of ‘Power Up,’ as well." Until I talked to the group, I didn't realize that every member was designated a color instead of a specific fruit for this summer's song. Keep scrolling to find out more about Irene, Joy, Yeri, Seulgi, and Wendy's thoughts on their personal hues and favorite beauty looks from "Power Up."

1. Irene's Orange Eye Shadow

For "Power Up," Irene's assigned shade was a rosy one: "A lot of pink blush and eye shadow was used for my makeup," she recalls. However, the pinked-out look wasn't her favorite from the music video. Irene points out a scene where the focal point of her makeup is the soft orange eye shadow brushed on her lids. "I rarely use orange for my daily makeup, but I really enjoyed it in the music video," she says. Maybe we'll spot Irene with even brighter variations of the citrus hue in the future. My go-to at the moment is Make Up For Ever's Artist Color Eye Shadow in Metallic-734 Tangerine.

2. Yeri's Floral Hair Clips

The youngest Red Velvet member looks to a hairstyle she had toward the end of the music video as her favorite beauty moment. Her stylist parted her down the middle before clipping back both sides with clips adorned with periwinkle flowers and pearls. "I loved the flower decoration in my hair," she says. "I think it’s something that goes perfectly along with the summer vibe." Check out the sparkly blue accents on her nails, too.

3. Joy's Poppy-Red Lipstick

After dyeing her hair candy apple red last summer to go with the "Red Flavor" concept, Joy jokes that she's become famous for her fruity looks. With "Power Up," her makeup artist took the lead in giving her look a fruit-inspired spin.

This time around, they swiped a poppy red onto her lips. "They also tried to enhance the sense of liveliness using fruity red orange-ish blush" to coordinate with the bright hue, Joy says, adding that she "really liked it." The Milani Rose Powder Blush in Coral Cove is a great option if you want to flush your cheeks with a similar shade.

4. Seulgi's Monochromatic Look

"The colors that represent me in this music video are yellow and orange," Seulgi explains. "In that sense, I dyed my hair orange." To complement her newly auburn hair, orange and yellow tones were incorporated in her eye and lip makeup, too. She adds, "I think I appear to be looking more bright and cheerful — I really loved it."

5. Wendy's Hot-Pink Lipstick

Although Wendy didn't reveal her own favorite makeup or hairstyle to me, I already had my own most-loved look in mind: her stunning fluorescent pink lipstick. Neon is becoming more and more popular these days, so I loved seeing Red Velvet's subtle take on the trend. Looking for a dupe? Inc.redible's Listen Hard Girl Neon Lip Paint will do.

6. Joy's High, Retro-Inspired Ponytail

For most of "Power Up," Joy's hair is pulled up into a retro high ponytail. "I don’t normally tie up my hair, but I did a ponytail and a half-up ponytail in this music video," she says. "I loved how my face is shown so clearly with those hairstyles."

7. Irene's Side Part

After having a middle part consistently for the past year, Irene was excited to change up her long dark hair a bit. "I loved how my hair was fully parted to the side," Irene says.
