Exclusive: Pat McGrath Labs, The Met Launch Museum’s First Cosmetics Range

Pat McGrath and The Metropolitan Museum of Art are joining forces for an exclusive retail collaboration. Timed with the opening of The Costume Institute’s spring 2018 exhibition, Pat McGrath Labs x The Met will offer a range of color cosmetics and apparel, making McGrath’s the first beauty brand to be sold at the museum.Since the 2015 launch of her first branded color item, Gold 001, McGrath has released lip kits, eye kits and matte lipsticks. In September she unveiled a core collection — a permanent range of color cosmetics that includes lipsticks, lip liners, eyeliners, a mascara and eyeshadow palettes. Last month the makeup artist revealed that she’s expanding the core collection by adding 14 shades of lip gloss, the first of which will make its debut via her collaboration with The Met.”I feel incredibly close to this year’s show — many of the extraordinary pieces featured are from shows and campaigns I worked on so to me, it represents some of the most beloved, groundbreaking moments throughout my career as a makeup artist,” McGrath shared via e-mail. “For the Metropolitan Museum of Art to include makeup and makeup artistry alongside some of the greatest masterworks of Western art is truly exceptional.”Pat McGrath Labs x The Met will unveil Lust: Gloss in “Aliengelic,” a duochrome infused with pink pearl, the first of the new lip gloss shades. The full gloss range, created using a gel and oil formula, will launch on May 10, but “Aliengelic” will be made available at The Met starting May 8. It will retail for $28 along with a special edition of the Mothership IV: Decadence Eyeshadow Palette — featuring shades of gold, silver, blue and brown — for $125. Packaging for both will include artwork from The Met collection. Pat McGrath Labs x The Met Mothership IV: Decadence Eyeshadow Palette and Lust: Gloss in “Aliengelic.””This limited-edition version of the Mothership IV: Decadence Eye Palette was inspired by paintings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods that it sits amongst, and the new Lust: Gloss shade ‘Aliengelic,’ which is making its exclusive debut at the Met, is an extravagantly ethereal gloss inspired by celestial beings and opulent textures I saw woven throughout ‘Heavenly Bodies,‘” said McGrath of the cosmetics offerings. She added that the lip category is a “major part” of Pat McGrath Labs, but declined to give specifics as far as sales percentages. The co-branded collaboration will include limited-edition apparel — short-sleeve T-shirts priced at $62 and long-sleeve T-shirts for $82 — in unisex sizing, with additional releases to come. This is not McGrath’s first foray into apparel; she launched a limited-edition collection of merch, Pat McGrath Apparel 001, at Dover Street Market in December.Asked how her business is expanding on the beauty and apparel sides, McGrath replied: “Whether designing makeup, apparel or makeup looks, the world of Pat McGrath Labs is always focused on deep disruption and a riotous ethos of unrestrained creativity. I have never been interested in doing what has been done before, and hope that Labs will continue to break ground, smash expectations and fearlessly focus on lifting up iconoclastic individuality. As long as we continue to do that, the possibilities are endless.” Pat McGrath Labs x The Met’s T-shirt offering.A champion of diversity, McGrath noted that though the beauty and fashion realms have seen a recent “renewed consciousness,” there is work to be done. “We are experiencing a renaissance of the individual and a celebration of people that demonstrates a renewed consciousness and desire to be more inclusive — though there is still a long way to go,” she said. “True beauty is about confidence, individuality and character and we must continue to demand beauty icons who represent all cultures, genders, expressions of sexuality, religions and cultural beliefs.”Pat McGrath Labs x The Met will be available at the exhibition store, with select offerings available at The Met Cloisters and online at store.metmuseum.org, starting May 8, the day after the Met Gala.
