Kristen Bell Says This Toxic Behaviour Almost Ruined Her Relationship With Dax Shepard

Noted beautiful people Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have been together almost 10 years now, and they have two young daughters together. Their interviews and appearances together are never short of adorable, and they’re pretty much every type of #goals you can imagine. But according to Kristen, things weren’t always so great between them.

In a recent interview on Harry, Kristen explained that when they first started dating, she loved making a dramatic exit. “The first year, you are working out your kinks,” she said. “I loved it. We’d get in a fight, because we would fight a lot, and I’d, like, yell something then slam the bedroom door, then I’d slam the front door, then I’d get in my car and then I’d skid out the driveway and I would sit around the corner in my car and it felt so good.” And it wasn’t until Dax called her out that she “realised how incredibly toxic it was.”

#tbt to when I cried at our wedding and @daxshepard thought it was really funny.

After a few months, Dax apparently put his foot down, telling Kristen that the dramatics were just too much for him.

“Three months into our relationship he was like, ‘You can’t leave anymore during fights. I’m not going to do that,'” Kristen explained. “I was like, ‘What?’ He’s like you can’t do that, I’m not going to have a relationship,” she continued. “He has a very high standard and a strong code of ethics. He was like, ‘No, I have more respect for myself, I love you but I’m not going to do that my whole life.’”

Back in August, Kristen gave Women’s Health more insight into her relationship. She explained that the couple actively choose to be happy, aren’t afraid to be vulnerable with each other, and always look for the underlying problem instead of picking a fight over small things. One of her most important relationship tips comes from a book she read.

“I think it was a Malcolm Gladwell book, but there was a chapter on this psychologist saying whether or not he could recognise that a relationship would last,” she said. “Within an hour he could say within a 90 percent chance. If you have contempt for the other person—if you roll your eyes or you disregard something they said—your relationship will fail, you might as well get out of it now. We’ve made a commitment, a verbal commitment, and an active one, to never have contempt for each other.”

So, better communication saved their relationship early on and stopped it from becoming irreparably toxic… and from the sound of things, they are still super solid. And thank goodness, because there really isn’t a more adorable celeb duo out there.
