Cigarette smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths. The improvements on a persons health and well-being when quitting are significant and has a huge reduction in health risks. The health benefits of quitting begin in as little as an hour after a persons last cigarette and continues to improve. This means it should be a no-brainer to give up cigarettes, however, quitting smoking is also one of the most difficult things a person can do. Tim Dunton is a leading hypnotherapist at the central london hypnotherapy in London and discussed with the Daily Express how hypnotherapy could help a person to quit smoking forever.

Tim Dunton has been a hypnotherapist for over 16 years. Dunton explains: “I have always had a keen interest in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), meditating and personal development.
“After experiencing a ‘burn out’ through stress caused by physical and psychological issues I was determined to bring positivity back in my life and moved to hypnotherapy and used my experience to better help others.
“Hypnotherapy is not a magic wand but I tell my clients to be prepared, highly motivated and determined to quit smoking.
“The benefit of hypnotherapy and working on a person’s trance state is that the unconscious mind knows more about us than we know about ourselves.
“Hypnotherapy aims to work simultaneously on a conscious and unconscious level to create positive changes and better decisions towards your health.”
Hypnosis is a focused state of attention similar to deep meditation and is a trance state, a naturally occurring state whereby a person hears therapeutic suggestions during this state of mind to better improve their lives. “Contrary to popular belief, clients don’t usually lose consciousness and are in fact consciously aware throughout the therapy session, although they may experience their attentions drifts off as if in a hypnagogic or dreamlike state,” added Dunton.
“During a stop-smoking hypnotherapy session, we first discuss the clients current triggers and associations with smoking.
“We then discuss alternatives to smoking and explore different strategies to mark the milestones of their quitting success. These discussions are crucial as the person needs to be fully prepared for the transition from smoker to non-smoker.
“We then move on to do over an hour of hypnotherapy. Firstly, the person is helped to take attention away from thoughts to relax the body and calm the mind.
“The person is encouraged to engage their imagination and creativity to help communicate with the unconscious mind.
“The person will be very relaxed throughout the process and will generally come out of hypnosis feeling as though they have been on a wonderful journey and more in control.”

The NHS said: “Half of all long-term smokers die early from smoking-related diseases, including heart disease, lung cancer and chronic bronchitis.
People who quit smoking by the age of 30 add ten years to their life. People who kick the habit at 60 add three years to their life.
In other words, it’s never too late to benefit from stopping. Being smoke-free not only adds years to your life, but also greatly improves your chances of a disease-free and happier life.”
