Restauranteur Michel Roux was a “legend” in the eyes of James Martin, who felt the loss deeply when his close friend passed away in spring last year. A year on from the tragedy, James pays tribute to his dear mentor. James Tweeted: “Hard to believe we lost this true gentleman a year ago. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction boss.” The Frenchman died at the age of 79, on March 11 2020, from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)
The charity Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis explained IPF is a “chronic and progressive lung disease”.
Studies suggest there are around 30,000 people in the UK living with this condition.
The disease most commonly develops in people aged 70 and older, but it can appear in younger people if there’s a familial history of the condition.
In IPF, scar tissue (i.e. fibrosis) builds up around the air sacs in the lungs.
This reduces its ability to transfer oxygen breathed in into the blood.
Environmental factors, such as dusts from metal, wood and agricultural work can contribute to the development of the disease.
Smoking is another risk factor, as well as a genetic disposition to the disease.
People with the condition are usually breathless and may have a persistent cough; they may feel fatigued, and some people may experience weight loss.

Another warning sign is when the fingertips become rounded and swollen – known as finger clubbing.
A doctor may also be able to hear crackles when they place a stethoscope over the heart.
Treatment involves prescribed anti-fibrotic drugs to slow down the scarring progression in the lungs.
For some people, medics may suggest a lung transplant, or novel therapies.
The terminal disease will lead to a loss of life; post diagnosis, most people live for a further three to five years.
At the time of Michel’s passing, James posted on Twitter: “Broken and so sad to let you know we have lost a legend and me a friend.
“Words cannot describe what this man did for me in my life… he taught, he listened, he advised and he strengthened every part of what I do.
“Michel I love you, always have and always will… Take care my friend and I will see you soon.”
