FDA Approves Generic Latuda for Schizophrenia and Bipolar Depression

The cash price for a 30-day supply of brand-name Latuda is around $1,500. Lurasidone’s release could be a reprieve for patients struggling to afford Latuda. While there has been no mention yet of the price for new generic lurasidone, generics are generally 30% less expensive than their brand-name counterparts.

What is Latuda for?

Latuda is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar depression in adults and children taking lithium or valproate.

Generic lurasidone will be available in the same forms and strengths as brand-name Latuda:  20 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg, 80 mg, and 120 mg tablets. The typical starting dose for Latuda is one 40 mg tablet per day.

What are common side effects of Latuda?

Common side effects of Latuda include drowsiness, weight gain, tremors, muscle stiffness, nausea, vomiting, runny nose, and sleep problems. Continuous use of Latuda can also cause more serious side effects like tardive dyskinesia, characterized by rapid involuntary movements, and increase the risk of heart problems, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Be sure to see your doctor regularly if you are taking Latuda or lurasidone, so they can monitor any signs of these issues.
