For many people an upcoming holiday is a cause for intense gym workouts and watching your diet.
When it comes the vacation itself, many will instantly throw away all their hard work, and sometimes put the weight back on.
While holidays are a time to relax and enjoy, it is still possible to keep up your fitness while taking the much needed time to unwind.
Jessica King from F45 Training Mill Hill spoke exclusively with the Daily Star to offer her top tips on how to stay fit even whilst on holiday.
She also discusses mistakes to avoid when exercising on holiday, and how you can keep your exercise regime going whilst soaking up the sun, sea and sand.
How to avoid putting on weight on holiday
Throwing caution to the wind when you finally arrive to your destination is one of the most important traps not to fall in.
Jessica said: “Of course, when on holiday, you want to enjoy and indulge without thinking of dieting.
“But it’s important not to go overboard if you are trying to cautious of your health and fitness whilst you’re away.
“There are easy ways to do this without feeling restricted, such as opting for lighter meals in the day and avoiding snacking in between meals – you will feel a lot better for it.”
Jessica continued on the importance of trying some local, fresh and healthy cuisine “that you wouldn’t usually eat at home.
“You will find wherever you go there will always be lighter options available but still feel like you are enjoying your holiday,” she added.

The time of the day you choose to exercise can be vital according to Jessica.
“When abroad in a hot climate, there are times of the day that you should avoid exercising,” she explains.
“It is so important not to overheat and dehydrate, so working out first thing in the morning, or at the end of the day, is key.”
Nobody wants to spend their holiday time maintaining the same gruelling workout regime they had beforehand.
“Rather than trying to maintain your usual fitness regime that you stick to at home, try switching it up when you’re abroad,” she explained.
“If you have access to a pool, swimming is a great form of exercise.
“Lots of hotels offer sports and activities, so get involved and try something new.
“Or perhaps try a run on the beach first thing in the morning, or early evening.”
Other tips to help keep the weight off while on holiday include:
- Limiting your carbohydrate intake
- Consume a more high-fat diet with avocadoes and oily fish
- Prepare for food emergencies
- Walk as often as possible
- Prioritise sleep
- Take supplements
- Choose alcohol with lesser calories
Jessica added: “The most important thing to remember is that going on holiday is about taking a break from your everyday life, unwinding, and having fun.”
Reducing your stress levels is integral when it comes to either weight loss of weight management.
Stress creates cortisol which stimulates a person’s fat and carbohydrate metabolism, creating a surge of energy in the body.
While this process is essential for survival situations, it also increases a person’s appetite.
The go-to advice is relax, enjoy but also be vigilant.
