For a lot of us (this writer especially) portion control is a very foreign concept: if it’s in front of us, we will eat it (an entire pizza is no exception.) That’s why we’re overjoyed to hear there are certain foods you can gorge on, without a skerrick of guilt… sort of.
In an interview with Byrdie, nutritionist Lisa Young listed nine varieties of fruits and veggies – celery, blueberries, grapefruit, cucumber, broccoli, strawberries, cauliflower, oranges and kale – as ingredients you can eat at any time, in any quantity, without needing to worry about putting on weight.
“They’re mostly made up if water, are low in calories and contain fibre, which can help make you feel fuller for longer,” she told the publication. “Plus, they’re packed with vitamins, antioxidants and other vital nutrients needed in a balanced diet.”
So… what’s the catch?
For starters, we wouldn’t be consuming that much anyway. As accredited practising dietician Nat Von Bertouch points out, there’s only so many cucumbers you can chow down on at any given time.
“Because these foods are so fibre rich they fill you up quickly,” she tells Women’s Health. “Plus, they require lots of chewing, which has a satiety effect.”
“That said, it’s never good to eat just one food with total abandon because it pushes out all the other healthy foods you need to include in the diet in order to have variety.”
‘nuff said.
