When I first mentioned to my friends that I was in the market to buy a new mattress, I was bombarded with brand suggestions left and right. I received texts from multiple people telling me about ones that ship right to my door, other ones that are customizable, and even ones that are good for people who work out. All of these were characteristics that I was looking for in a mattress and I wanted one that fit them all. Luckily, I discovered Helix and I knew I wanted to give it a try.
Helix mattresses initially seemed to check off all the boxes that I was looking for, but I have to admit, my interest in trying one out was mainly spurred by the fact that it arrived compact in a box, straight to the door of my fourth-floor walk-up apartment. Pretty nice, right? After clicking around its website and perusing the nine models that it offered (ranging from $600 to $1,440), I thought there had to be something there that I liked, so I went for it.
How It Works
To help customers find their ideal pick, Helix functions a little like a dating app for mattresses: By answering a questionnaire, you're matched with an option that fits as many of your needs as possible. I started my online mattress shopping journey off by first taking Helix's sleep quiz and answering basic questions about the size of my bed, my preferred firmness, and my height.
The questions then moved on to be a bit more personal: my preferred sleep position, if I experience back pain, and even about any tossing and turning that I do while sleeping. I answered that I was looking for a queen-sized bed that had good airflow because I tend to overheat quickly while I sleep, had medium firmness and plushness, and conformed to the shape of my body because I do often have lower back pain from overdoing it during my workouts. I ended up being matched with the Helix Dusk ($995 for a Queen size), a mattress that promises to do all of those things. Naturally, I (metaphorically) swiped right.
How It Arrived
It arrived while I was away from my apartment, so UPS ended up leaving it in the lobby of my building at the foot of the stairs. My first thought when I got home to it was not entirely pleasant because the bright cobalt box was — understandably — very heavy and not easy to lift. After all, the weight of an entire mattress was mashed in a box that only stood at approximately four feet tall.
With the help of my roommate, we lugged it up three flights of stairs to my bedroom, where I started tearing into it. Once I removed the cardboard, out came the mattress. It was rolled up tightly in plastic that I had to unroll, pull apart, and snip open for the bed to take its shape. Unboxing videos for these type of mattresses are sort of an Internet phenomenon because of the mesmerizing nature of this whole process. I definitely could see why.
How I Slept
My friends warned me that beds that come in a box often take a few days for it to retaining its final shape. Mine took only about 10 minutes. They also warned me that breaking in a new bed also takes several days. Again, mine didn’t need any breaking in. My first night sleeping on the Dusk, I was wowed at how the bed found the contours of my body. Helix uses a latex-foam material on Dusk’s top layer to mold around and react to my body’s curves. My lower back, which had been injured the week before, was not disturbed at all because of how supportive this bed is. According to its website, this support also comes from hundreds of individual coils that help to cradle the body while also limiting motion transfer. Finally (and possibly most importantly), the bed never got too hot during the night because of the two breathable layers of sheet covers that lay on the actual mattress’s surface. Just like that, I was fast asleep in just a few moments. No bedtime story required.
Helix mattress in Dusk
Bed-in-a-box options are a dime a dozen these days, making it easier to pick out a new mattress without ever leaving your old one. Picking the right one for you, however, can be a bit difficult if you've never actually slept on it — and that is where I think Helix's personalized sleep quiz can be quite helpful for some folks since it helps to narrow down your options.
To make the most of any new mattress, let's take a moment to remind you about the importance of shutting off and powering down before you hit the hay: According to Charla Fischer, an orthopedic spine surgeon at NYU Langone's Spine Center, "Getting good quality sleep helps to decrease stress hormones [and while] a mattress that lets you sleep well is very important, it is only a part of the sleep process." Fischer also previously told Allure, "It is also important to have a regular sleep routine such as limiting screen time and going to bed at the same. The most comfortable mattress cannot make up for poor sleep habits like doing work on a laptop in bed until 2 a.m."
The Final Verdict
As for me, I’ve been joking to everyone that this bed is ruining my life — it’s so comfortable that I can’t will myself to get out of bed in the morning and it has already caused me to be late to work twice. But it is honestly the best mattress I’ve ever slept on. To try out the Helix mattress in Dusk like I did or its other eight options, check out its website and take the sleep quiz for yourself. I know that it was well worth it for me.
Disclosure note: Helix allowed our writer to try its mattress services for free, but the review is 100 percent honest.
