A full face of makeup and rising summer temperatures don’t mix. Even when going as simple as possible — just a touch of foundation here or a smattering of concealer there — the heat can turn the most minimally made-up face into one shiny beacon of light that rivals the sun. With temperatures reaching 90 degrees in Paris yesterday, this is something that makeup artist Peter Philips had to deal with backstage at Dior's haute couture 2018 show. Luckily, he had just the product in his beauty arsenal that would do the trick. Philips (who is also the brand's beauty creative and image director), broke out the Dior Capture Youth Glow Booster, a serum that both mattifies skin but also keeps makeup in place no matter how hot it gets outside.
“It’s all about the skin and it having a natural lightness to it,” Philips said backstage. Unsurprisingly, that meant some skin-care prep. But all the oils, creams, primers, and finishing powders were set aside in favor of the Dior Capture Youth Glow Booster. Wondering how a serum called "glow booster" doesn’t make you look like a greaseball in the heat? I wondered, too. Turns out that Dior combined the vitamin C-rich murunga plum with alpha hydroxy acid to brighten and smooth skin in the most lightweight formula possible.
“We started with one or two drops of the Capture Youth Glow Booster because it helps set the foundation,” Philips said. “You don’t need too much because it’s kind of sticky, but that’s what gives you the long-lasting makeup result.” You can mix the serum in with foundation or use it on its own (Philips prefers the latter), and I can attest that the serum sinks right into the skin without leaving any type of residue behind — sticky or greasy.
For a clean finish, Philips used the brand’s just-launched Backstage Face and Body Foundation (which is available in 40 shades and already has Meghan Markle’s seal of approval). Applying it to the skin (and even using it to cover up a few tan lines!), Philips added a touch of concealer as needed and skipped the blush.
To give added dimension to the face, Philips applied the just-launched Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette (shown above and below) to the models' faces right before they stepped out on the runway. “I apply a little bit on the sides of the face, Cupid’s bow, and on the eyelids at the last-minute so [the pigment is] almost floating on the face and doesn’t set in as metallic,” Philips explained. He swept a mix of the white and gold shades in the palette on the models' with lighter skin tones, while he used gold and bronze on the models with deeper complexions.
The Dior Capture Youth Glow Booster costs $95, which is significantly less than a Dior gown, but definitely pricey considering you can pick up serums at the drugstore for under $25. But, the fact its makeup artist approved, leaves skin bright and glowing, and promises to keep foundation from becoming a melty mess (something we could all use right now in this scorching heat), then maybe this is one beauty splurge that's totally worth it.
