Unless you’ve kept well away from social media/news outlets/the Internet for the past 48 hours, you’d know that the youngest Kardashian/Jenner sibling just gave birth to her first child (courtesy of her baby daddy, rapper Travis Scott).
Yup, after months of being mysteriously MIA, Kylie took to Instagram yesterday to share the exciting news and explain why she’d keep her 100+mill fans “in the dark” throughout her pregnancy.
“My pregnancy was one I chose not to do in front of the world,” she wrote.
“I knew for myself I needed to prepare this role of a lifetime in the most positive, stress-free and healthy way I knew how.”
“I knew my baby would feel every stress and every emotion so I chose to do it this way for my little life and our happiness.”
Despite this reasoning, sceptics are crediting the announcement (which conveniently coincided with Super Bowl Sunday) as the genius of momager Kris Jenner – who’s infamous for her strategic marketing skills.
But whether it was pressure from the fam or simply her own motherly intuition, one thing is for certain: Kylie’s explanation is totally on the money.
Research conducted by the University of Zurich states that, “when stressed, the human body releases hormones to handle the higher stress, such as the so-called corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which results in an increase in stress hormone cortisol. This mechanism also persists during pregnancy, and the placenta, which supplies the fetus with nutrients, can also emit stress hormone CRH. As a result, a small amount of this hormone enters the amniotic and fetal metabolism.”
Not only can ongoing exposure to stress negatively impact both the physical and emotional well-being of mums (and make them more at risk of post-natal depression), but it can seriously affect the unborn baby’s development. Studies suggest it makes them more sensitive to stress once outside the womb, causing their brains to be more susceptible to anxiety and worry later on in life.
So, while Kylie may have gone to extreme measures to keep her pregnancy private, we have to give her props for being proactive when it comes to all things health.
