Former Home and Away star Tammin Sursok has written candidly about the importance of prioritising your mental health on her blog Bottles & Heels.
The mum-of-one revealed that she’d recently suffered a burnout – much to her disbelief – and shared her experience of coming to terms with it.
“A burnout, I thought. Can a 34-year-old really go through that?” she wrote.
“I know that I feel like I’m the dregs and leftovers of my former self but does that mean I’m prematurely mid-life crisis-ing all over the place?”
The Aussie actor has previously spoken about her struggles with postpartum anxiety after the birth of her daughter Phoenix in 2013.
Her therapist suggested she take some time off from her busy schedule and Tammin decided to ‘put her own oxygen mask on before attending to anyone else’s’, but it didn’t come easily.
“The narrative for women is changing but the biology of women is not. To ‘have it all’, a woman must work as hard as a male, if not more, to prove that she is worthy and qualified. Then in our spare time pop out a few kids with zero pain and zero help.”
“The almost painful chatter in my right side of my brain made it borderline impossible to stop. But like riding a bike, self-care started to become a minuscule part of my daily routine,” she wrote.
“From a seemingly sinful yoga session to drawn out meditation to one too many nourishing massages, little by little, my health (both mental and physical) became less of an indulgence and more of a necessity.”
She says that for the first time she didn’t feel guilty, she felt better. And this is a message that all mums need to read – self care is not selfish.
