Lung cancer is one of the most serious types of cancer to be diagnosed, because it’s usually only spotted after its spread through the lungs or into other parts of the body. But, there are still some possible warning signs you should be looking out for – although they might not be what you’re expecting.
The cancer is diagnosed in almost 50,000 people each year in the UK.
It’s one of the most common types of cancer to be diagnosed – but it’s also one of the most serious.
Older people are more commonly affected by lung cancer, and it’s rare in anyone under 40 years old.
Smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer, accounting for more than 70 percent of total cases.
There are usually very few symptoms of lung cancer in its early stages, warned the NHS.
But, the main symptoms include having a cough that persists for two to three weeks, coughing up blood, feeling breathless for no obvious reason, and having an ache or pain while breathing.
If you develop any of these symptoms, you should speak to a doctor straight away.
However, some symptoms aren’t seemingly related to the lungs at all, and might be confused for something else.

For example, some lung cancer patients develop a numb pain in their arms and shoulders.
This symptom is often linked to a type of lung cancer called a Pancoast tumour, which spreads to the spine or nerves.
Persistent weight loss has also been linked to lung cancer, while some people find the ends of their fingers appear fatter than normal.
The skin next to your fingernail may look particularly shiny, and the nail might curve forward like a spoon, according to the Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers.
“It is widely believed that a cough is the primary sign of lung cancer, or that everyone diagnosed with lung cancer would experience shortness of breath,” it said.
“However, that’s not always the case. In fact, there are several surprising signs and symptoms that can indicate lung cancer.
“What sort of symptoms would be considered unexpected, shocking, or surprising?
“These signs and symptoms don’t appear to be related to our lungs. The general public would not expect these indicators or signals to be a warning of lung cancer.”
