Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body can’t control the amount of sugar in the blood. The body doesn’t response to insulin properly, and this can cause blood sugar levels to become too high. If the condition is left untreated, complications such as kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and foot ulcers can occur, so doing what you can to control blood sugar levels is very important. Eating a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise are can help, but some experts also recommend the addition of supplements.
Ayurvedic doctors help support glucose balancing by prescribing these herbs

Some GPs are willing to support the taking of herbal medicines to improve glucose levels, says Dr Sarah Brewer who is on the medical advisory board for CuraLin.
CuraLin contains a blend of 10 traditional Ayurvedic medicinal herbs, including bitter melon, fenugreek, amla fruit and turmeric.
Dr Brewer said: “Ayurvedic doctors help support glucose balancing by prescribing these herbs.
“Research involving the individual herbs within CuraLin show their many benefits on metabolism.
“Bitter melon, for example, contains a chain of amino acids known as polypeptide-p, which is structurally similar to insulin and can reduce glucose levels, reduce glucose absorption from the diet and reduce the production of glucose in the liver, so that blood glucose levels improve.
“Others, such as turmeric, fenugreek and amla fruit improve insulin release from the pancreas or activate insulin receptors to reduce insulin resistance.
“Gymnema sylvestre reduces sensitivity to sweet tastes and suppresses sugar cravings, while picrorhiza kurroa inhibits an enzyme (alpha-amylase) that breaks down dietary carbohydrates to slow the release of dietary sugars.
“Together, these synergistic actions produce an effective response to improve blood glucose control and energy levels.”
Every person with type 2 diabetes is an individual with different underlying causes, risk factors and genetic make-up.
An individual herb that works for one person may not work for another because of the different sensitivity of their cell receptors, for example.
But Dr Brewer adds: “Combining 10 different Ayurvedic herbs, which work in different ways, help to overcome this so that everyone responds to some of the ingredients.
“It also means lower doses of each herb are needed, which significantly reduces the chance of side effects.
“If you have glucose intolerance or type 2 diabetes that is managed by diet and lifestyle alone, but your readings aren’t improving as well as you would like, CuraLin could make the difference you’re looking for.
“CuraLin produces a significant beneficial effect on glucose levels, with many people finding their glucose control normalises within 4 weeks. They also report improved energy, sleep and general quality of life.
“If you are taking prescribed medicines for type 2 diabetes, check with your doctor first.”
Another supplement that’s been proven to lower blood sugar is cinnamon.
