Born on June 19, 1930, in Wisconsin, Gena Rowlands was the daughter of a banker father and actress mother. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Gena pursued a career in acting; she attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. There, she met fellow student Cassavetes, whom she married in 1954, and went to star in his productions such as A Woman Under The Influence (1974).

To younger fans, Gena will be recognised for her portrayal of an older woman with Alzheimer’s in the film The Notebook (2004).

Unlike her character in The Notebook, Allie Calhoun, Gena still has her wits’ about her, including her health.

Perhaps Gena’s longevity, in part, could be down to lucky genetics. Her mother, Lady Rowlands, died in 1999 at the age of 95.

“My mother was a very independent woman,” Gena reflected. “She was terrific. She could have done anything really.”

In the interview with the LA Times in 2014, Gena added: “She had that desire to get out and do things. It never left her.”

The grandmother – to five grandchildren – has not revealed what exactly has kept her in tip-top condition over the years.

Experts at the National Institute of Health (NIH) noted: “It is estimated that about 25 percent of the variation in human life span is determined by genetics.

“But which genes, and how they contribute to longevity, are not well understood.”

Such a statement suggests that 75 percent of a person’s longevity prospects is due to environmental factors.

While tragedies, such as car accidents, can not be anticipated, there are other factors that can be moderated to help extend longevity.

One of the best chances for leading a long and healthy life is to adhere to healthy habits.

One such example is to prioritise daily exercise, as strongly recommended by the NHS.

All adults are encouraged to elevate their heartbeat for at least 150 minutes each week.

A great way to commit to your health is to carve 30 minutes of daily exercise into your routine.

All exercises count, as long as you feel a little bit warmer when performing them and you breathe that little bit harder.

Hailed as the “miracle cure” we have all been looking for, there are multiple benefits of exercising such as:

  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Reducing cholesterol levels
  • Stabilising blood sugar levels.

The fuel you put into your body is also critical in whether you live a healthy or diseased life.

By filling up on saturated fats, found in sweets and cakes, you are damaging your body.

A healthy system requires plenty of nutrients and minerals, which can found in fruits and vegetables.

Moreover, healthy proteins need to be consumed, such as those found in chickpeas.
