One sign of uncontrolled blood sugar levels, as seen in type 2 diabetes, is waking up during the night to go to the toilet. This is known as nocturia. The global diabetes community assured that needing to go to the toilet once during the night is usually nothing to worry about. However, “needing to urinate more than once during the night” could be.

Such disturbing activity could be the body’s way to excrete excess glucose (i.e. sugar).

“In this instance, more sugar appears in the urine and simulates extra volumes of urine to be produced,” the health platform stated.

Receiving a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, and an action plan on how to manage the condition, will be helpful in reducing urination needs.

Even during the day, another sign of high blood sugar is needing to go to the toilet more often.

Diabetes UK added: “High levels of glucose being passed in the urine are a perfect breeding ground for the fungal infection which causes thrush.”

Thus, repeated episodes of thrush could also be a telling sign of type 2 diabetes.

Thrush

The NHS described the warning sign of the yeast infection that is known as thrush.

In both men and women, there can be irritation around the genital areas.

There are some differences, however, between the manifestation of thrush in the genders.

For instance, in women, the white vaginal discharge (similar in appearance to cottage cheese) does not smell.

In men, however, the cottage cheese discharge is accompanied by an unpleasant smell.

Other signs of thrush in men include: difficulty pulling back the foreskin; burning and redness around the head of the penis and under the foreskin.

Women might experience soreness and stinging during sex or when they urinate.

If you have thrush more than four times in one year, it is advised to visit your doctor.

Thrush treatment usually involves anti-fungal medicine to get rid of the infection.

While healing, it can help to wear cotton underwear, to dry properly after washing, and to use only water and emollient instead of soap to wash the affected area.

The global diabetes community added: “For people with diabetes, keeping blood sugar levels under control will certainly help to reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks of yeast infections.”

High blood sugar can be determined by a targeted blood test arranged by your doctor.

It is better to have blood glucose levels checked to help prevent further complications should you have the condition.

Untreated type 2 diabetes can lead to a higher risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.
