Can’t lose weight? NHS reveals six factors that could be getting in the way

2. Medication

If you’re working hard but seeing no weight loss results, it could be down to the medication you’re taking.

Check the packets of any pills you are taking.

In some instances, weight gain could be a side-effect to the medication.

Common drugs that have these affects include steroids, drugs and insulin.

3. Late nights

Getting enough sleep is important for your health and wellbeing.

And in the past, research has linked tiredness to weight gain.

Previously, NHS weight loss consultant spoke to Daily Star Online about sleep.

She said a good eight hours “reduces the tendency to snack on high fat and sugar foods the next day to replace energy”.

The medical expert added that it can also save you around 300 calories.

4. Portion sizes

It doesn’t matter how healthy your diet is – if you over-eat, you will gain weight.

Always check food packaging for recommended portion sizes before tucking into a meal.

Keeping an eye on the item’s nutritional value, and calories, is also available.

The NHS adds: “At home, serve yourself a smaller portion and think about whether you really want a second helping.

“Avoid supersizing portions when eating out.

“You can control portion size and save money when you cook fresh, healthy meals at home.”

5. ’Low fat’ foods

“Low fat” doesn’t necessarily mean “healthy”.

In fact, diet products can sometimes be packed with sugar and salt.

They can also contain more calories than you’d expect, so it’s best to check labels before picking them up.

Instead of relying on “low fat” convenience food, it’s best to get cooking at home.

This way, you know exactly what’s going into your dishes.

6. Watching too much television

We all love Netflix binges and late night Love Island catch-ups.

But unfortunately, these could be ruining your chances of losing weight.

Inactivity can lead to your waistline expanding.

But thankfully, you don’t need to switch off your telly in order to fight the flab.

Working out in front of the box – or while you’re carrying out household tasks – is a great way to burn calories while watching your favourite shows.
