‘By Combining Intermittent Fasting And A Low-Carb Diet, I Lost 88 Pounds In Less Than 2 Years’

My name is Shanee Golder (@itsjustlowcarb), and I’m 32 years old. I live in Washington D.C., and I’m a tv/film production hair and makeup artist. By focusing on my diet and eating low-carb and using intermittent fasting, plus strength training, I lost 88 pounds.

I was overweight for my entire life. I would go to the gym occasionally or have a workout streak, but would never see any results. I also had no idea that your diet plays a major part in weight loss. I would make small changes here and there, but I’d never be consistent with the changes.

Overall, I felt like I was too young to be as tired and exhausted as I was after a long day of work.

My job consists of me standing on my feet for long hours, and the extra weight had taken a toll on me. At 29, my weight hit a high of 255 pounds. So I decided to make a change for myself, and I started my journey in July 2019.

I started with keto after months of research. I felt like keto would be easy to follow. After a few months of doing keto, I did see results, but I realized it was a bit too strict for me to fit into my work schedule and lifestyle.

So I switched to a low-carb eating plan since it was a little less strict and a lot easier to follow. I like to stick to 20 grams of net carbs a day. I also implemented intermittent fasting five days a week, and I don’t eat after 7 p.m. daily.

Here’s what I eat in a day now:

  • Breakfast: One cup of Two Good vanilla yogurt topped with a tablespoon of Sola Granola, strawberries, and blueberries.
  • Lunch: Two ounces of tuna and mayo.
  • Snacks: Half serving of Whisps Cheese Crisps.
  • Dinner: Low-Carb pizza (made with one cauliflower pizza crust, one-quarter cup Vesper Bros Pizza Sauce, six pepperoni slices, one-third cup mozzarella, and one tablespoon of pesto) and a salad (made with three grape tomatoes, one-quarter ounce blue cheese crumbles, and two cups of spring mix, drizzled with Walden Farms Balsamic).
  • Dessert: Keto Pint ice cream.

The gym can be extremely overwhelming for a beginner.

When I first started my journey, I did cardio only and it worked great. I dropped weight pretty fast, but after a while I wanted to do more, but I didn’t know where to begin.

I hired a trainer to help me start my journey into strength training. Since then, I workout on my own three to four times a week, mostly strength training with mild cardio. I absolutely love strength training now.

Overall, I lost 88 pounds over a year and a half.

My weight loss journey was one of the best decisions I made. I feel more energetic, motivated, and I have more self confidence. While this journey wasn’t easy and surely wasn’t perfect (yes, I still enjoy my favorite snacks from time to time), it was 100 percent worth it.
