Ben & Jerry's Just Released an Anti-Trump Ice Cream Flavor

Ben & Jerry’s has gotten involved with political issues many times during their 40-year history. The Ben & Jerry’s Foundation was created in 1985 to support grassroots activism and community organizing, and they’ve shown support for the Black Lives Matter movement and Rock The Vote.

They’ve also used their ice cream to make a statement, like when they renamed their Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream to I Dough, I Dough in honor of marriage equality in 2015. In 2016, they made a custom ice cream flavor called Bernie’s Yearning in honor of then-presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, and they later created the EmpowerMint flavor to promote voting rights. Now, they’re getting involved again by introducing a new flavor right before the midterm elections.

On Tuesday, the company announced the arrival of a new flavor called Pecan Resist. The limited batch flavor features chocolate ice cream with white and dark fudge chunks, pecans, walnuts, and fudge-covered almonds. It sounds delicious, but there’s also a deeper message behind the new flavor.

Today we launch Pecan Resist! This flavor supports groups creating a more just and equitable nation for us all, and who are fighting President Trump’s regressive agenda. We cannot be silent in the face of the President’s policies that attack and attempt to roll back decades of progress on racial and gender equity, climate change, LGBTQ rights, and refugee and immigrant rights – all issues that have been at the core of our social mission for 40 years. Pecan Resist is also the name of Ben & Jerry’s campaign to peacefully resist the Trump administration, and the campaign supports four organizations. Color of Change works to fight racial injustice, Honor the Earth creates awareness and support for Native environmental issues, Neta works to voice the needs of border residents along the Texas-Mexico border, and the Women’s March harnesses the political power of women.

The graphics on the ice cream were designed by Bay Area artist and activist Favianna Rodriguez, and the message on the pint reads in part, “Welcome to the resistance. Together, Pecan Resist! We honor & stand with women, immigrants, people of color, & the millions of activists and allies who are courageously resisting the President’s attack on our values, humanity & environment. “

Ben & Jerry’s also released a statement saying that they “cannot be silent in the face of President Trump’s policies that attack and attempt to roll back decades of progress on racial and gender equity, climate change, LGBTQ rights, and refugee and immigrant rights – all issues that have been at the core of the company’s social mission for 40 years.”
