Number of young diabetes sufferers 10 times higher than expected

Almost 7,000 young people suffer from Type 2 diabetes, 10 times more than previously thought.

Diabetes UK analysed the number being treated by GPs in England in 2016/17.

Previous estimates, based solely on how many young people attended specialist paediatric diabetes units, put the figure at 715.

The latest data shows that 207 of those being treated were under 15, and eleven were nine or younger.

Around 90% of diabetes cases are Type 2, which is linked to obesity.

Caroline Cerny, of the Obesity Health Alliance, said: “It is hugely concerning.

"It highlights the need for urgent action from Government to help young people lead healthier lives.”

Women who work nights and do not follow a healthy lifestyle increased their risk of diabetes by 31%, Harvard’s School of Public Health in the US found.
