Five ways to ward off illness this winter, according to the NHS

No one wants to get ill over the festive period.

Not only can it make you miss out on Christmas parties, it can also take some of the fun away from family gatherings.

If you’re stressing about feeling under the weather, there are some steps you can take to reduce your chances of falling sick.

On the NHS website, health experts outline the best ways to stay healthy during winter.

Here are five tips you should take if you want to feel your best in December.

1. Get enough rest

Many of us feel sleepier in the winter months.

This tends to be because of the lack of sun – so try to make as much of daylight time as possible.

When it gets to the evening, be sure to be in bed a a reasonable time.

Getting enough kip can be enough to prevent winter tiredness.

Meanwhile, meditation and exercise is recommended for those who feel burnt out due to stress.

2. Don’t forget your 5 a day

From mince pies, to cheeseboards and gut-busting turkey dinners, festive food isn’t always the best for our bodies.

For this reason, it’s important that you’re still getting your five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables every day.

If you’re feeling Christmassy, why not try a juicy clementine.

And when you’re eating your roast dinner, make sure to pile the carrots and parsnips high on your plate.

3. Drink more milk

This should help to give your immune system a boost during winter.

The NHS adds that milk and other dairy products are a good source of protein, as well as vitamins A and B12.

They also contain calcium, which works to strengthen our bones.

The health website adds: “Choose semi-skimmed, 1% or skimmed milk – rather than full-fat – and low-fat plain yoghurts.”

4. Exercise

While it’s tempting to curl up by the fire and not move for weeks, try to resist the urge to do so.

Health experts recommend getting out of the house and staying active.

Ice skating and wintry walks are both good suggestions for families.

The NHS explains: “Regular exercise helps control your weight, boost your immune system, and is a good way to break the tension that can build if the family is constantly cooped up inside the house.”

5. Don’t skip breakfast

Set yourself up for the day with a hearty morning meal.

The NHS recommends porridge, which is packed with fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Oaty breakfasts should also keep you feeling fuller for longer.

And what’s more, they also taste really comforting and warming after you wake up.
