We haven’t even stuffed our faces with turkey and all the fixings yet, but many are already looking ahead at 2019, including Whole Foods.

Whole Foods just released its fourth annual food trends and predictions for next year, giving us just a taste of what we might see take over our Instagram feeds in the coming months. Some trends mentioned in their report we’ve seen slowly roll out this year (like eco-conscious packaging), while others are a bit more surprising (faux-meat snacks, anyone?).
Let’s get right into their top 10 food trend predictions.
Pacific Rim flavors
To start, expect to see a whole lot of Pacific Rim-inspired flavors in grocery stores and restaurants alike. These flavors come from Asia, Oceania and the western coasts of North and South America and include everything from tropical fruits — like guava, dragon fruit and passion fruit — to meats — like longganisa (a popular Filipino pork sausage), dried shrimp and cuttlefish.
Whole Foods also predicts a surge in probiotics in shelf-stable everyday pantry products. For instance, granola, oatmeal, nut butters and soup will have added probiotic ingredients. More surprisingly, probiotics will make their way into cleaning products and beauty products like sunscreen.
With the rise of popular diets like keto, paleo and pegan (paleo and vegan), fats are making a comeback. You’ll see them integrated into snacks and ready-to-drink vegan coffee beverages.
“Meatless all the things” seems to have been the consensus in 2018, and in 2019, the trend will continue on, this time hitting the snack aisle. From jerky to pork rinds, plant-based snacking will become all the rage next year.
Plenty of brands have been switching over to more eco-friendly packaging, including Kraft Heinz, which promised earlier this year to make 100 percent of its packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable globally by 2025. Looking ahead, Whole Foods predicts brands will emphasize reusable packaging, including an increase in produce departments going “BYOVB” (bring your own vegetable bag) and traditionally single-use packages going multiuse, like multiuse food wraps made from beeswax.
The other food trends include more hemp, including hemp plant stem cells in beauty products. Frozen treats will also get far more creative with the addition of some unexpected bases, like avocado, hummus and tahini. Even plant-based frozen desserts and ice creams with artisanal cheese will make their appearance in 2019.
Additionally, seaweed snacks had their time, 2019 will see sea greens showing up in dishes like seaweed butter and kelp noodles. And we’ll even see an increase in elevated, fancier snacks, like puffed snacks made from water lily seeds, crispy snackable salmon skins and individual charcuterie or cheese boards.

We saved the best for last: Whole Foods predicts consumers will be even more conscious about the brands they support. Brands that give back, be it via proceeds or the people they employ, will likely see more sales. For instance, Kuli Kuli’s moringa powder is grown and processed by women, and the brand has provided more than $1.5 million in income to women-led farming cooperatives, nonprofits and family farmers around the world.
“Contributing toward social movements via purchasing goods and services with missions you believe in can make for big changes that extend far beyond the world of retail,” Whole Foods’ press release states.
Now that’s a trend we can all get behind.
