Which Halloween Candy is the Most Popular?

Every Halloween, young children fill their bags with tons of different candies to indulge in for at least the next month. While everyone has a different preference for which candies they love and hate, sales would say that there are certain types of candy that are definitely more well-liked than others. These are the top 10 most popular Halloween candies you can expect to see trick-or-treaters with this year.

10. Jolly Ranchers

It’s hard to resist popping in a Jolly Rancher. They’re sugary and small, so they’re the perfect thing to indulge in while you walk around pouring candy into your pillowcase. More than one million pounds of Jolly Rancher candies are sold each Halloween season, giving these sweet treats the No. 10 spot on the list.

9. Tootsie Pops

Tootsie Pops have been around for decades, but nobody knows exactly how many licks it takes to get to the center. But we do know that 1.043 million pounds of Tootsie Pops are sold each year during Halloween. This classic treat is nowhere near going out of style.

8. Hershey’s chocolate minis

The first all-chocolate candy on the list is Hershey’s mini chocolate bars. They’re a compact version of the classic chocolate bar and come in a variety of flavors such as milk, dark, and almond. Nearly 1.1 million pounds are old around Halloween every year.

7. Hot Tamales

Hot Tamales are pretty much the only spicy candy on the market, so they have a monopoly in their own way. Despite not having the sweetness of most Halloween treats, these candies are still some of the most popular each year. About 1.4 million pounds are sold every Halloween season.

6. Candy corn

Candy corn is one of those iconic Halloween candies that people either love or hate. Regardless of your personal thoughts, it’s definitely a Halloween staple. And the statistics would agree, considering 1.5 million pounds of it are sold each season. It may end up sitting as a decoration on your coffee table until it gets too stale to eat, but you’ll probably buy it again next year anyway.

5. Starburst

Starburst is one of those candies that you also either love or hate, but it depends entirely on the flavors you get in your mini pack. It’s the type of candy that people are either super excited to receive or super bummed, depending on which flavors they find inside. Either way, 1.7 million pounds of Starburst are sold each year around Halloween.

4. Reese’s cups

There is something about a Reese’s cup that screams Halloween. It could be that Reese’s makes Halloween commercials every year. But clearly the people agree, since just under two million pounds are sold each year. However, an uptick in peanut allergies has had peanut butter banned from certain schools and other public places. Regardless, this candy still comes in at No. 4.

3. Snickers

This is the first candy that breaks the two-million-pound mark. About 2.2 million pounds of Snickers are sold each year. Snickers bars are loaded with chocolate, caramel, peanuts, and nougat, so it’s not hard to see why it attracts so many candy givers and receivers alike.

2. M&M’s

M&M’s are another Halloween classic. They’re perfect for almost any occasion, and this holiday is no exception. Despite weighing so little per M&M, nearly 2.5 million pounds are sold each year. It’s hard to imagine how many individual M&Ms are actually sold, but it’s easy to assume they’ll be a big hit for many years to come.

1. Skittles

Surprisingly (or maybe not), Skittles are the most popular Halloween candy in the United States. A staggering 3.4 million pounds of Skittles are sold every year, blowing every other candy out of the water. It could be their sweet flavor varieties or their fun appearance, but they seem to be a hit with everyone during each Halloween year.
