Have Tacos for Lunch Because There's a National Health Alert for Prepared Salads and Wraps

As if yesterday’s Chipotle food safety shut down wasn’t stressful enough, there’s another health alert to be on the lookout for. For anyone who was planning on having one of those tasty prepared salads or wraps from their local grocery shop today, you might want to stay away because there’s an apparent parasite contamination in chopped romaine lettuce.

According to a statement from the Food Safety and Inspection Service, Caito Foods, a produce distribution and processing company, said its lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, recalled the chopped romaine lettuce because of potential cyclospora contamination that could lead to awful nausea, diarrhea, and fatigue.

To be safe, stores like Trader Joe’s, Kroger, and Walgreens as well as Gordon Food Service issued a recall of prepared salads and wraps. The products you should avoid have “sell by” or “best by” dates ranging from July 18 to July 23, but apparently the parasite’s “incubation period” is up to two weeks. Basically, this contamination could last through August 6 so it’s best to check the FSIS site to see what to watch out for.

There haven’t been any reported cases of illness caused by the recalled products, but effects can take up to six weeks to show up, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
