Winter is coming for the characters of Game of Thrones, but for fans of the epic HBO fantasy, it’s been two winters of waiting for it to return to our screens. With the final season ready to premiere on April 14, 2019, Oreo is celebrating with all of us thanks to their new Game of Thrones-themed Oreos. After all, nothing says “war between good and evil” like cookies and milk… or something.
The Oreos will come in a black package emblazoned with the names of some of the most famous characters from the show, like Lannister, Targaryen and White Walker. In the center of the package, an Oreo cookie sits on what appears to be the Iron Throne.
According to Instagram junk food detective @CandyHunting, the Oreos will be… Oreo flavored. Inexplicably, Oreo has eschewed the chance to offer us a funky new GoT-themed flavor, and we’re honestly mourning the lost opportunity. They could have gone with something subtle, like lemon cakes (Sansa’s fave) or mint chill (winter is here!) or something totally out there, like dragon fruit or blood and wine or even done a mixed pack of mystery flavors in honor of Arya’s time with the Faceless Men. But no. The Oreos are the same black-and-white, chocolate-and-vanilla cream situation we’ve always been served. Is it some kind of commentary on the ruling class — no matter who winds up in charge, in a monarchy, the status quo always stays the same? Just look at how ruthless Dany has become as she gets closer to taking back the throne. Maybe next time, Oreo should have us all vote on the flavor. It seems like Westeros could really use a little democracy.
There’s no official release date yet for GoT Oreos, but they’re slated to hit shelves at some point before the next season of the show airs. And for all my harping, I must admit I’ll definitely be picking up a few packs for my viewing party. After all, not only does the packaging look cool, but Oreos are vegan too. Something sweet and cruelty-free to balance out the carnage on-screen is always welcome.
