If you shop at Walmart regularly, then you know the retailer has a lot to offer. You can get great prices, perks, some of the freshest fruit, and a wide variety of organic food. Another option Walmart shoppers have is grocery pickup. However, this choice might not be such a great idea.

Here are a few reasons why Walmart grocery pickup just isn’t worth it.

How Walmart grocery pickup works

Walmart grocery pickup is a service that allows you to do your grocery shopping without having to go inside the store. Once you set up an account, all you have to do is place an order, reserve a delivery date and pickup time, and then come to the store’s parking lot where groceries are delivered to your car. If you don’t meet certain requirements, you won’t be able to use the service, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

1. You can’t select items yourself

If you’re picky when it comes to selecting grocery items or you like to be in total control, Walmart pickup isn’t for you. Walmart employees are the ones who go through the aisles and select items to be placed in your cart. This could be a problem when it comes to fruit and vegetables. For some shoppers, there’s nothing like holding these items in your hands and carefully inspecting each part to make sure there are no blemishes or discoloration.

2. You can get groceries delivered to your home

Why choose grocery pickup when you can order groceries online and have them delivered to your home? Walmart recently started offering home delivery in a few cities. However, if this option isn’t available in your area, you also have the option of using other popular services like Fresh Direct or Peapod.

The grocery delivery service is likely the store’s response to consumers’ growing interest in online grocery shopping. It was also important for Walmart to make changes in light of Amazon’s food delivery services and its $13.7 billion deal to buy Whole Foods.

3. Coupons aren’t allowed

Groceries can be expensive. Coupons can be a lifesaver when you’re trying to trim down your grocery budget. The only thing is, coupons are not allowed if you decide to use Walmart grocery pickup. if you’re a frugal shopper who relies on coupons save money, you might not be happy with this service. If you decide to go ahead and use this service anyway, you can save a few bucks by purchasing generic brands.

 4. Gift cards are not allowed

Coupons aren’t allowed, so you can use gift cards, right? Wrong. A gift card cannot be used to make purchases – even if it’s from Walmart. Credit and debit cards are the only forms of payment accepted for Walmart grocery pickup purchases. On the bright side, you can use the Walmart Savings Catcher. If a local competitor offers a lower price on an item, you can get the difference on a Savings Catcher Rewards eGift Card.

5. Substitutions might not be what you want

Walmart gives you the option to allow for substitutions if the store is out of an item on your grocery list. However, the substitution might not be an item you’re completely satisfied with. If you were at the store, it would be easier to select the product you want. Instead, if a grocery item you choose isn’t available, someone from Walmart will choose another item for you. If you’re unhappy with the substitution, you can reject their choice and have the item deducted from your order.

6. A minimum order is required

If you were thinking you could just order one or two items and have them delivered to your car, you are incorrect. A minimum order of at least $30 is required if you want to use Walmart’s grocery pickup option. However, this is often the case for other online grocers. For smaller orders that don’t come up to at least $30 you’ll have to actually get out of your car, walk into the store, and do your own shopping.
